Professional development isn’t a course.

It’s the one skill standing between someone and their key objective this quarter. Most training budgets get this backwards. They find what’s available, like a generic AI course, instead of what’s actually needed to get the results the business needs. The person gets a certificate they under utilize. The goal gets missed.

A few years back, I ran the online business unit of a fitness company. The goal: grow from $2M to $5M in a year. My product lead had to ship a key retention feature on a tight timeline. She’d learned agile on the job. Never certified. So we got her Scrum certified, fast, tied directly to that one release. She shipped on time. Customer retention rose 20%. Average lifetime value went from six months to nine. We grew 120% that year. We kept the team that got us there.

That’s the difference between a training budget and a retention strategy. One is generic. The other is specific, timed, tied to a real number someone actually has to hit. I practice what I preach on this one.
So here’s the actual question worth asking this quarter. Not what training is available. What’s standing between your best person and the key objective you already gave them.
